The need

There  are very few worthwhile things that do not entail a degree of risk.  However, it is important that for any organisation, project or initiative:

• All potential risks are identified
• Once identified they are assessed and understood
• Based on that assessment, a decision is taken as to their acceptability and treatment - for example, risk mitigation or transfer.

The initial process of risk identification and assessment is critical.  All too often major  risks are overlooked because they are covert, intangible, taboo or uninsurable.

Even when  identified they are often dismissed because of false assumptions made about their likelihood, potential impact or management.
